His masonic party piece was the First Part of the Mystical lecture in Royal Arch .He joined Mark and progressed to Junior Overseer. In 2002 it was the inaugural Burnes Festive Board and as an experience piper he not only piped in the haggis but also addressed it; a tradition that has continued after his death.
